Our Coaching Staff
Head Coach - Rick Ferriola
Rick Ferriola has been coaching competitive swimming for more than 30 years. He has been at Hofstra now for 26 years and along with his coaching staff has developed one of the top teams in the Metro region.
National level athletes as well as novice level swimmers have achieved much success as a result of being a team member at Express.
Head Coach - Robert Ortof
Robert has been coaching in the metro area for more than 35 years. He has coached many swimmers to the Junior National and Senior National level. He is rated as one of the top coaches in the country. This year Express has sixteen Junior National Qualifiers.
Assistant Coach - Gail Wakefield
Gail will be going into her 20th year as coach of the Express swim team. Gail helps develop our Junior level swimmers. Her patience and caring approach towards our young swimmers along with her knowledge of stroke technique has given her much success.
Gail has also had much success at the Senior level helping several swimmers reach the Nassau County High School Championship finals as well as placing them in the NYS championships. Gail is a graduate of Syracuse University.
Assistant Coach - Gil Smith
Express welcomes coach Gil back for his seventh year. We are very excited to have Gil back, he has over 30 years coaching experience both at the USA and High School level.
He has been a tremendous addition to our staff. Gil coaches the Senior level at Hofstra.
Assistant Coach - Sunny Porras
Sunny joined the Express staff in 2008. Sunny coaches the Future Stars program for 8 & under swimmers as well as the Junior Olympic practice group. He focuses on improving swimmer's technique and developing them into efficient swimemrs. As a swimmer, Sunny competed for Great Neck North High School and SUNY Cortland. He graduated SUNY Cortland in 2007.
Assistant Coach - Richard Stern
Richard began coaching for Long Island Express in 2007. He currently assists the Jericho National group as well as the Gold and Silver groups. Richard also coaches both the Jericho boys and girls varsity swimming and diving. Richard swam competitively for Plainview JFK High School and Ithaca College. He graduated Ithaca College in 2000 with a Bachelors degree in History. In 2002, Richard earned a Masters in Secondary Education from Hofstra University. He has been a teacher in the NYC public school system for 14 years.
Assistant Coach - Ed Ryan
When Ed joined the Express in Fall 2013, he brought a wealth of experience to the staff. Ed has been a coach member of United States Swimming since 1983 having served as the Head Coach at University Swimming, Lindenhurst Swimming and Deer Park Swimming, and as an assistant coach at Farmingdale Swim Club. Ed has a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from LIU-CW Post. Ed was a school teacher from 1985-2010.
Assistant Coach - Dan Porras
Dan joined the Express coaching staff in 2012. Having nine years of coaching experience, Dan coaches the Bronze and Senior groups at the Hofstra pool. He received his BS in Recreation from SUNY Cortland in May 2009. Dan earned an MS in Recreation, Sport and Tourism from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in May 2014.
Assistant Coach - Angelo D'Errico
Angelo first joined the LIE coaching staff in 2010, as both a coach and swimmer. With 8 years of coaching under his belt ranging from age group to college, Angelo is the current coach for the National Tram at the Jericho Pool and the Silver and Gold groups at the Hofstra pool. Angelo holds a BA from Seton Hall University in Italian and Russian language and culture, as well as an MS from Hofstra University in Sports Science.
Assistant Coach - Adam Nussen
Adam is in his fourth season coaching at Express. He has been coaching Age Group and Masters swimmers for a combined 8 years. He has been swimming competitively since childhood and is an avid aquatic athlete, lifeguard and waterman. Adam is currently pursuing his degree in physical education and is looking forward to a future career in athletic coaching.
Assistant Coach - Stephanie Palmeri
Assistant Coach - Matt Russo
Matt has been coaching swimming for 10 years. He is a former swimmer who went 1:01 in his best stroke, the breaststroke. When not coaching at Express, Matt teaches swimming at Saf-T-Swim.
